Are You Storing Fat Before You Exercise?

A number of scientists argue the case that if you want to get rid of more fat, you should skip eating before you work out.  A number of studies suggest exercising while your body is low on food may be a good way to trim excess fat.

In a current study, researchers found that cyclists who trained without eating burned significantly more fat.

According to USA Today:

“Muscles usually get their energy from carbohydrates … if you haven’t eaten before exercising, your body doesn’t have many carbohydrates in reserve. That forces it to burn fat instead, scientists say.”

Sources: USA Today June 4, 2010
As you can tell from reading the USA Today article above, there’s significant controversy on this subject. There is general agreement that exercising on an empty stomach will help burn more fat, but that’s about where the consensus ends.

Some experts believe it’s a bad idea because exercising vigorously when you’re blood sugar is low could lead to dizziness and poor performance. Others warn that exercising while hungry leads to overeating afterwards.

As always I want to use some common sense and understand how the body works. For example, if you feel weak or nauseous while exercising on an empty stomach, you would be foolish to not at least eat a small meal before exercising,

.A number of other individual factors can play a role, such as your age, when you last ate, whether or not you’re pregnant, taking medications, your medical history, level of fitness, and the type of exercise you engage in.

But first, let’s look at the science behind this theory. USA Today mentions several such studies.

So, how does it work?

Fasting Forces Your Body to Shed Excess Fat

Here is a fact, all fat burning processes in your body are controlled by your sympathetic nerve system, and your sympathetic nerve system is inherently activated by exercise and lack of food.

The combination of fasting and exercising maximizes the impact of cellular factors and catalysts (cyclic AMP and AMP Kinases), which force the breakdown of fat and glycogen for energy.

So yes, training on an empty stomach is a very real way to force your body to burn fat.

You also need to realize that eating a full meal, particularly carbohydrates, will impede your sympathetic nerve system and reduce the fat elimination effect of your exercise. Instead, eating lots of carbs activates your parasympathetic nervous system, which stimulates energy storage—the complete reverse of what you’re targeting for.

Some people do have a tough time exercising without eating something first. Typically these people are more sensitive to changes in their blood sugar levels, which can drop during the first minutes of their workout. It is this decline in blood sugar that causes dizziness, faintness, nausea or lightheadedness. This is especially true if you exercise first thing in the morning.

What You Should Eat Before Exercise to Significantly Boost Fat Elimination

The flip side of fasting prior to exercise, unfortunately, is reduced performance. Providentially, there is another, perhaps even more efficient way to boost fat burning without fasting.

Another recent study published in the journal Medicine and Science in Sports & Exercise, demonstrated that consuming whey protein (20g protein / serving) 30 minutes before resistance training boosts your body’s metabolism for as much as 24 hours after your workout.

It seems as though the amino acids found in high quality whey protein activate certain cellular reactions which in turn promote muscle protein synthesis, boost thyroid, and also protect against declining testosterone levels after exercise.

In lay terms, consuming 20 grams of whey protein before exercise and another serving afterward may yield the double benefit of increasing both fat burning and muscle build-up at the same time.

Other forms of protein will provide similar results. But you must be careful Many Protein Drinks are Loaded with Toxic Metals.

Consumer Reports recently tested 15 different protein drinks, and discovered that some of these products were significantly contaminated with toxins such as arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury.

Clearly, drenching your system with toxic metals can cause significant damage, so knowing what to look for is very important. This is why we utilize the services of the Natural Health Research Institute to investigate products for us before we make any recommendations. www.MyFavoriteHealthStore.com is a safe source as criteria for inclusion is the product must pass the scrutiny of the Natural Health Research Institute.

Additional Health Benefits of Whey

In addition to raising your fat metabolism when consumed before and/or after exercise, whey protein has been linked to a variety of other health benefits, such as:

  • Helping your pancreas-produced insulin work more effectively, which helps stabilize your blood sugar levels
  • Promoting healthy insulin secretion
  • Helping to promote your optimal intake of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals needed for your overall wellness
  • Supporting your immune system, as it contains immunoglobulins
  • Maintaining blood pressure levels that are already within the normal range

Start Your Morning By Energizing Your Body

Personally, I typically exercise first thing in the morning utilizing the metabolism boosting exercises described in the Doctor Directed Weight Loss Program takes me about 6 or 7 minutes, , and then many times  have a whey protein shake for breakfast or a couple hard boiled eggs (without the yolk). This ensures that I get my exercises done before anything has the opportunity to derail my plans, and gives me plenty of energy for the day ahead.

I prefer not eating before working out, but if you feel you need to eat something before you get going, whey protein is definitely one of your best options. It’ll curb your hunger while still optimizing fat burning.

You can’t get anywhere near the same benefits from eating a typical American breakfast loaded with carbs…

Sorry Monsanto; Growth Hormones Given To Milk Cows May Produce More Milk, But Is Not Healthy For Consumers!

Milk From Cows Treated With Growth Hormone Is Not Healthy!

Monsanto is the agri-business conglomerate (some would say “evil” giant) that developed Posilac, a genetically modified (GM) bovine growth hormone, also known as rBST and rBGH.

This month, a federal court said that “Ohio cannot ban dairy producers from putting a label on their products to inform consumers that no growth hormone has been used”.

That’s good for Ohio citizens. But even better is the thinking behind the court’s verdict, which just happens to repudiate the FDA claim of “no significant difference” between milk from cows that have been “supplemented” with growth hormone, and those that have not been “allowed” the displeasure.

According to the court, there is “compositional difference” in three ways: 1) Increased somatic cell counts (which means there’s more pus in the milk), 2) During each lactation, there’s a period when the milk has lower nutritional quality, and 3) The milk contains increased levels of the hormone IGF-1.

Sound Familiar?

A few weeks ago, IGF-1 consumption was linked to colon, breast, and prostate cancers. That’s one of the reasons why Japan, Australia, Canada, and every country in the European Union has forbidden the use of rBST.

This Ohio court decision is ENORMOUS, because it addresses the entire question of how dairy products should be labeled.

The FDA actually does allow dairy producers to label their products as “not from cows treated with rBST.” But until now, that claim also has to include this statement: “No significant difference has been shown between milk derived from rBST- treated and non-rBST-treated cows.”

Because the Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit has pointed out the very clear and significant differences between rBST and non-rBST milk, will dairy producers be able to tell consumers the truth?

Don’t bet on it. Especially if Monsanto has anything to say about it. And they will. This company doesn’t exactly have a reputation for standing aside and letting the chips fall where they may.

Meanwhile, you should do your best to avoid any food from animals treated with growth hormones. Do your best to choose organic. No other disclaimer about growth hormones is necessary.

You can also visit an online shopping guide that lists a wide range of products that are free of genetically modified organisms. The website is called Non-GMO Shopping Guide (nongmoshoppingguide.com). In addition to general food products, the site also lists resources for baby food, pet products, and body care products.

Eggs: The Healthiest Food On The Planet… IF You’re Eating The Right Kind

Posted by : DrDivad | In : Nutrition

Compiled by, Dr. David Alan Hackbart

The Cornucopia Institute has released a report that exposes widespread abuses in the production of organic eggs, primarily by large factory farms.

The study compares management practices employed by small organic egg farmers with those of large industrial operations that label eggs ‘organic’ that have been produced by chickens confined by the hundreds of thousands in industrial facilities.

According to Cornucopia News:
“After visiting over 15% of the certified egg farms in the United States, and surveying all name-brand and private-label industry marketers, it’s obvious that a high percentage of the eggs on the market should be labeled ‘produced with organic feed’ rather than bearing the USDA-certified organic logo,” said Mark A. Kastel, The Cornucopia Institute’s codirector and senior farm policy analyst.”

Eighty percent of all organic eggs are produced by a handful of operations. Most of these businesses own hundreds of thousands to millions of birds and market a percentage of their produce as ‘specialty eggs,’ one of which is organic. Most of the giant hen houses used by these factory farms provide no legitimate access to the outdoors, which is a requirement of federal organic regulations.

“Many of these operators are gaming the system by providing minute enclosed porches, with roofs and concrete or wood flooring, and calling these structures ‘the outdoors,'” stated Charlotte Vallaeys, a farm policy analyst with Cornucopia and lead author of the report.
“Many of the porches represent just 3 to 5 percent of the square footage of the main building housing the birds. That means 95 percent or more of the birds have absolutely no access whatsoever.”

Per Cornucopia News, family farm-scale organic egg farmers will challenge agribusiness lobbyists at the October 25 meeting of the NOSB (National Organic Standards Board).

The True Meaning of “Free-Range” Eggs
Don’t be hoodwinked by the egg industry’s double talk definitions of what organic and free-range really is. Real free-range eggs are produced from hens that walk about liberally outdoors on a prairie where they can search for their natural diet, which is comprised of seeds, green plants, insects, and worms.

A hen that is allowed outside onto a cement slab for a few minutes a day but is fed a diet of corn, soy and grain meal, plus synthetic preservatives, is not an organic free-range hen, and won’t produce the same quality eggs as its scavenging equivalent.

Similarly, a hen that is fed an organic regimen, but never gets to go outside is also not a factual free-range hen, even though it may currently slither through as an “organic” one…

The main part of a hen being truthfully organic is having free range access to outdoor paddocks. It’s not just about being fed organic grains. This is a key point of controversy within the egg industry.

Family Farm Organic Egg Producers Are Trustworthy
There is good news: You can depend on your small, local farmer to bring to market some of the best food on earth.

The vast majority of family-scale egg producers complies with, or exceeds, organic regulations.
Cornucopia reports; “An important subset of organic farmers is even going far beyond the minimum requirements in the organic standards: not just providing access to the outdoors but rotating birds on high-quality pasture,”

Obviously the small farmer can’t compete against cheaper mass-produced organic eggs. Because factory grown “organic” eggs characteristically do not satisfy the expectation of organic consumers. But the majority of consumers purely do not comprehend that they’re being duped, because both eggs bear the identical organic label…

For additional information, and to locate a high-rating organic egg producer in your area, please see Cornucopia Institute’s site, http://www.cornucopia.org/organic-egg-scorecard/

Organic Eggs are Healthier, More Nutritious Eggs
Organic, free-range hens are without doubt healthier, they live longer, produce eggs with superior flavor and nutritional content than the factory-raised hens. A hen that has been in a crowded pen simply will not yield as nourishing an egg as a hen that has been pastured, even if it’s fed a great organic diet.

Simply put, the healthier the hen, the healthier the eggs, and outside access is a major part of optimal health for any animal.

An egg-testing project performed by Mother Earth News in 2007 found there were significant differences in nutrition between factory-farmed and organically raised eggs.

Compared to official U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) nutrient data for commercial eggs, eggs from hens raised on pasture may contain:
• 1/3 less cholesterol
• 1/4 less saturated fat
• 2/3 more vitamin A
• 2 times more omega-3 fatty acids
• 3 times more vitamin E
• 7 times more beta carotene
As you can see these are dramatic differences!

Where To Find The Best Eggs.
Ideally it would be best to locate a local famer where the chickens are fed well and raised in humane conditions and allowed to eat insects. I have never seen store bought eggs that compares to the color of the yolk in these eggs. Typically they are deep orange, where most of the store bought eggs are light yellow.

If you must purchase your eggs from a name brand grocery store, I recommend selecting a high-rated brand from The Cornucopia Institute’s report, to ensure you’re actually getting high-quality organic eggs.

Food Additives That Add Fat To Your Body

Posted by : DrDivad | In : Weight Loss

13

I wanted to share some of this new research on “obesity additives.”

These are the “tasty” ingredients that food scientists slip into the food we eat every day that make it almost impossible for us to lose fat (especially around our midsections).

If you’re like me, you’ve probably heard this going on… but you subconsciously think there’s nothing you can do about it.

But did you know that…  Many of the chemicals all too commonly found in today’s foods can be just as addictive as alcohol, cigarettes, and even various street drugs.

The stuff they’re putting in our food to keep it artificially “fresh” for years and even decades, can
actually make changes in our brain chemistry… causing us to become addicted to gaining body fat.

Furthermore, in order to make you crave their “product,” the industry spikes your food with: trans fats, caffeine, MSG, high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors, flavoring, extra salt, and sugar. What you get is a food time bomb disguised as a healthy treat.

No wonder America is getting fatter…

With all of this in mind, here are THREE WAYS obesity additives work to make our bellies bulge:

1. Two of these obesity additives interfere with a hormone called leptin that tells the brain we are full while eating.

2. Other obesity additives add fat by changing how our bodies use the calories we eat. They do this by increasing a fat-storing hormone called insulin. When this happens, calories are converted to fat instead of being stored as “muscle energy.” This leads to fat deposits in all of our trouble areas-like under the chin, the backs of the arms, the belly, and the lower body.

3. Still other obesity additives actually make us addicted to them and cause us to eat uncontrollably. They do this by altering brain chemicals called neurotransmitters-just like a highly addictive drug does.

A Short List of Obesity Additives to Stay Away From…

Stripped Carbohydrates: listed as sugar, flour, enriched white flour, white flour, enriched bleached flour, enriched wheat flour, wheat flour, semolina flour, white rice, maltodextrin, glucose, high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), fructose, sucrose, dextrose, and levulose.

MSG
Research demonstrates that monosodium glutamate causes obesity, making unhealthy snacks even worse than you may have suspected.

One characteristic of the obesity induced by excitotoxins is that it doesn’t appear to depend on food intake. This could explain why some people cannot diet away their obesity.”

But how does MSG cause obesity? Like aspartame, MSG is an excitotoxin, a substance that overexcites neurons to the point of cell damage and, eventually, cell death. Humans lack a blood-brain barrier in the hypothalamus, which allows excitotoxins to enter the brain and cause damage.

According to Dr. Russell L. Blaylock in his book Excitotoxins.  “MSG creates a lesion in the hypothalamus that correlates with abnormal development, including obesity, short stature and sexual reproduction problems.” Children seem to be more susceptible.

Did you know that many food manufacturers have hidden MSG in your food under different names? Not to mention the fast food you may be eating, for which most people don’t bother to read the ingredients, is often filled with various excitotoxins.

MSG hides behind other names like – “Hydrolysed Vegetable Protein”, “Natural Flavoring”,  “Monosodium Glutamate”, “Autolyzed Yeast”, “Hydrolyzed Plant Protein”, “Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein”, “Glutamic Acid”, “Vegetable Protein Extract”, “Senomyx” and “Calcium Caseinate”.

According to John Erb. In his book “The Slow Poisoning of America”, he said that MSG is added to food for the addictive effect it has on the human body. MSG is even in your favorite coffee from Tim Horton’s and Starbucks coffee shops.

Artificial Sweeteners: listed as Splenda (sucralose), NutraSweet (aspartame), Sunette (acesulfame K), and Sweet ‘N Low (saccharin). The scientists believe that artificial sweeteners may “short-circuit” the body’s natural ability to sense how much it has eaten.

Added Caffeine in soft drinks and energy drinks (a few cups of green tea or coffee each day are fine).

High Saturated Fats (also listed as partially hydrogenated oils and trans-fats).

Excess Alcohol (if you must, one to two drinks per week).

Excess Salt/Sodium in chips, crackers, canned food items, pickles, various cheeses, pretzels, condiments, and salted nuts.

I hope you found this update useful!  Comment  with your thoughts. I’d love to hear from you!

Sincerely,

Dr David Alan
