“Meal Replacement Shakes A Bad Idea For Weight Loss”

Think about the top reasons why people are overweight today. Overweight people fall into different categories.

  • They have an unhealthy lifestyle – working long hours, lack of sleep, high stress
  • Not getting enough of the right exercise
  • They simply eat too much, often in a compulsive way.
  • They eat the wrong food
  • Most people are relying on the wrong information.

Meal replacement shakes do not address any of the points above. When it comes to meal replacement, the word of the day is buyer beware.

Obviously people are always looking for the easy way out. “Help me lose weight with zero effort on my part”. “I want to lose weight but take no responsibility”.  “I want to lose weight but I don’t want to change my daily routines”.

Meal replacement concoctions prey on people who are looking for a good sales pitch of “take this it will give you all your nutrients you need and you can lose weight”.

When we have analyzed most meal replacements they are filled with synthetic vitamins,  chemicals, and fillers. There is no evidence that by drinking these meal shakes it causes anyone to ingest less daily calories.  They are generally loaded with carbohydrates in the form of simple carbohydrates which have more of a tendency to produce fat cells than the complex carbohydrates found in nature.

Stay away from those who have the pitch they are low fat or fat free. First your body needs fat in it’s diet so it can absorb many of the vitamins and minerals. Secondly when fat is removed from a natural food by necessity they have to add sugar or corn syrup to repair the taste, or you would never be able to gag it down.

Many meal replacement manufactures tout a mantra that these meal shakes provide your daily nutrition and the majority of the public are missing many essential vitamins, minerals, enzymes and amino acids.  It may be a true statement that the general population is nutritionally deficient, but meal shakes are not the healthy way to get the nutrients your body needs. You would be much better served to take a high quality multi-vitamin with a natural well rounded diet.  And taking a high quality multi-vitamin will cost you much less than those expensive meal shakes.

Bottom Line: You are always better off to find the nutrients naturally in the food you eat, than to rely on highly processed powder fake foodstuffs.

My last point regarding meal shakes for weight loss is simple. The largest problem with most diet programs is they do not work for the long term. Most end in a roller coaster ride. Why, because they go off the diet and go back to their old diet, their old habits. Meal shakes play right into this mentality: suffer through the agony of ingesting these smelly, tasteless meal shakes for a month and you will lose a few pounds… then when you eat real food you will find that at best all you did was shrink fat cells you did not do what it takes to eliminate fat cells. So the weight comes back on quickly and usually brings a few extra pounds with it.

Instead, change your eating habits; eat more of the metabolism boosting foods which will actually boost your metabolism simply by eating them.  Take most of your calories in the form of real food. You should not be drinking calories at any time in your day.  Now add to that metabolism boosting exercise described in the Doctor Directed Weight Loss Program and you can lose weight effectively and keep it off.  All you need is 10 minutes per day.
