What Ireally enjoy about Pilates is that, anyone can do it. You can teach, elderly people or elite sports people, you can treat osteoporosis or serious injuries, there are just so many things you can do with it. Because pilates is not jarring to joints and because it uses deep, coordinated breathing and slow precise movements it is suitable for everyone. Pilates is one of only a few types of exercise that is shown to be energizing, no matter what your age or condition of health .

Pilates is in the top 3 of the fastest growing types of exercise in the world. In the United States alone, the numbers of people practising it has grown from 1.7 million in 2000 to 14.6 million in 2010 – more than 700% growth in just ten years!

Pilates is a pleasing mind-body workout , which focuses on core stability and posture, aiming to lengthen and strengthen muscles. The exercises are performed in a controlled and gentle manner it shares some similarities to yoga as itincludes relaxation and breathing techniques. The basis of pilates includes control, concentration , proper alignment, centering , precision, breathing and flowing movement. The beauty of pilates is that it can be individualized to suit anyone .

The main focus of Pilates is on the “powerhouse”parts of the body includes the muscles of the the lower back along with the abdominals . Because of its focus, pilates has become really popular not only in the area of fitness, but also in rehabilitation . Pilates is well known as a positive mode of movement-based exercise that genuinely can be tailored to any level of not just health, but also of fitness .

Using a series of breathing, stretching , and muscle toning techniques, Pilates increases the body’s balance, muscle tone and flexibility . Pilates is now widely employed by many elite athletes across a wide range of sports and in case you are wondering , Pilates is just as good for men as well as women.

Pilates is best taught by a properly Trained Instructor, usually in a Pilates Studio. This is the best way to learn to carry out the exercises correctly if you are new to pilates . Because it is such a different type of exercise than most of us are used to . Being taught properly by a fully certified Pilates Teacher is important. later on, when the fundamentals are learned, a great option is to join a class.

In a pilates class you will be working with other people, sometimes just 3 or 4 and in a really large pilates studio, there can be up to 30 others working alongside you. Most pilates will require you to have had some personal one to one pilates training before you join a class.

The great thing is though , that once you have been taught the basic exercises , you are free to mix some classes every now and then with some home work outs as well. This keeps costs down and allows you plenty of flexibility in when and where you work out.

There are now 100’s of Video’s and DVD’s on-line. As well as lots of inexpensive equipment you can buy for home use . Pilates isn’t always something you only do in a pilates studio, but do take the time to learn the basic exercises from a professional Teacher first .
